Hm, I'm not exactly sure what you mean because if you, for example, make a pipe network, the gases also mix with bundled units. I've already put something similar out there

I am not even sure if this one is possible but the idea is instead of having cables and pipes all though the floors, walls and generally in a big mess trying to get them everywhere what if there was a single duct you can install that could either be flush with the surface or sunk in a little so it is invisible in the wall/floor. The ducts are sort of like a pipe or cable where you can join them together into a network and has all the standard connections but it does nothing itself apart from provide a way to have network for the connection points connected to it. You then have 4 connectors (Gas, liquid, Data only, Standard power with data) and you can put these anywhere on the ducts to transfer via the virtual connections in the duct. When you put a connector on the duct you then configure that connector to connect to an existing virtual pipe or cable in the duct that or create a new one and name it etc. It could be you select the cable size or it is just your unlimited cables or some direct pass thought. which ever is easier to do but it would allow many things to connect to different pipe and cables running though the duct without needing all those physical cables and pipes everyhere. The duct needs to go everywhere but that is easier than many different pipes etc and then you just need normal pipes for the last bit from the duct to the device using the gas, liquid or power.
Balancing the cost of it all is likely a little hard. I guess you could either make the duct or connectors very costly or maybe a better but likely a lot harder way to do it would be to charge the length of the cable or pipe needed when you connect a new connector to an existing virual pipe/cable based on the distance to the closest existing connector.
Ideally it would be something i would want in my bases from quite early on if feasable to balance it in some way

yes that is sort of similar but limited to 1 of each type. The duct can have for example 25 of each type. Sort of like how in building they sometimes put a place to run all the cables and pipes in, it is sort of like that but to make it easier the cables would not exist till you place a connector on it. A connector would be an actual block in game that can only be put on the duct and you then config it to connect to a set "pipe" or "cable" in the duct or create a new one.
In the default game if i want to run say 5 power cables, 8 gas pipes and 2 liquid pipes around the place they take up a lot of space and get in the way of each other if they need to cross over etc. This makes it a single game block that has many in it at it is the connect you place that controls what is connected to what. In a way it is a little like wireless network but instead more pysical as the connector needs to be attached to a duct. Another way to think is it is sort of like the cargo ducts in game and you place it something like that mabe but as you add connections onto it of different types and config them it adds cables or pipes inside the duct or just creates direct connections between the connectors that are set to the same cable or pipe name may be easiest.
The connector would likely be a very small device not much bigger than a connection point on a machine but with a maybe a small display and config button so you know the name of what it is connected to and the button to bring up the connection settings. Eg you may have one pipe in the duct called "O2" and another called "N" and on the connector if you config it to connect to the "O2" pipe in the duct then it would say "O2" on its screen and any pipe you connect to that connector would be connected to other connectors on the duct that are also set to "O2" pipe in the duct.
Does that make sense as all or still not clear? My mod https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3748368905 sort of does it just for data and power but over wireless. I would have prefered to have a physical network like a duct one instead of wireless and support gas and fluid as well but i could not work out how to do it so just went wireless to make it easy to make the mod.
Maybe calling it a bus for the gas and liquid part in an automation game may make sense?
also just so you know all the notification emails were getting marked as spam from here for some reason. hopefully now i set as not spam i will get the notifications.
I like the idea, but I was thinking more like cable trays so we could lay cables next to each other to save space? So have the ability to lay 5 cables along a wall instead of the default 3

Thanks so much i will go test it out but looks exactly like what i was thinking of.
has a BUG i think.
I tested this in game just starting with gas pipe first. I built a utility duct and put 2 gas pipe connectors on it. I created the pipe strand/network on it and for the second connector i added in 2 insolated pipe since that is what i had on me. I connected one end to my gas network and other i just put some pipe on it. In connector setting it seemed to show both connectors connected to the strand and it said the same thing on their screen but both screens and config screen showed the connectors were OFF. The middle button to turn them on was not clickable and on the config screen there was no option i could see to turn them on there either that i could see.
Also when creating a spine it took me a while to work out where the name text box was. It was black on a black background for me so totally invisible so i though i had to click the button and it would ask the name and when that did not happen i only found it by clicking around the screen to see where my cursor changed. It should be made more visible.
While it seems to have a bug you have built exactly what i wanted. Thanks so much!
