The air conditioner

The air conditioner needs all three pipes, its Setting is target and direction at once, and three efficiencies tell you how well it is working right now.

Lesson 16 min Week 24

What you learn today

  • All three connections must be used
  • Setting decides the direction
  • Read the efficiencies

The air conditioner (StructureAirConditioner) is the strongest tool for heat in pipes – and the most often misunderstood. Treat it like a thermostat and you will wonder why it suddenly heats.

Three connections, all mandatory

ConnectionWhat happens
Inletgas that is brought to the target temperature
Outletthe finished gas
Wastegets the opposite: the heat when cooling, the cold when heating

If one of the three is missing, the unit silently resets itself, draws 10 W and does nothing – without an error message. First question for “the AC does not work”: are all three pipes connected?

Setting is target and direction

Setting is the target temperature in kelvin (3.15 to 1272.15 K). At the same time the value decides what the unit does:

  • Setting below the inlet temperature → it cools.
  • Setting above the inlet temperature → it heats.

With sgn you see the direction as −1, 0 or 1:

lbn inlet AIRCON HASH("Klima") TemperatureInput Average
sub tmp target inlet
sgn tmp tmp # 1 = heats, -1 = cools

You do not write Mode – on and off via On, the direction via Setting.

Reading the efficiencies

Three values between 0 and 1 show what is holding the unit back:

LogicTypedrops when …
TemperatureDifferentialEfficiencythe difference between inlet and waste grows
OperationalTemperatureEfficiencyinlet or waste get extremely hot or cold
PressureEfficiencythe pipe pressure is low – full only from about 111 kPa on both sides

Multiplied together they roughly give the total efficiency.

Warning

The classic misunderstanding: a cooling stage gets a Setting that is above its inlet temperature during a cold start. Then it heats back at full power. The Setting of a cooling stage must always stay below the inlet temperature.

Note

The air conditioner only cools pipe gas, not the room air – about 14 kJ per tick at most. The cold reaches the room only through a wall cooler or radiator on the cooled loop.

Exercise

Task

The air conditioner “Klima” gets its target temperature from the dial “Soll” in °C (if it is missing, 20 °C applies).

  • Setting = target in kelvin
  • Display “Richtung”: +1 when it heats, −1 when it cools (sign of target − TemperatureInput)
  • Display “Wirkung”: product of the three efficiencies in percent, −1 without the air conditioner
  • Flashing light “Klimawarnung” on below 50 % or when the air conditioner is missing

Hints

Hint 1

Write the target in kelvin to Setting with sbn.

Hint 2

Direction: read TemperatureInput, sub tmp target inlet, sgn tmp tmp.

Hint 3

Efficiency: read three values and multiply them, times 100. Without the unit that is NaN – select sets −1.

Quiz

4 questions. You pass from 60 % – the server does the grading.
