The gas mixer

The gas mixer splits two inlets according to Setting. How to set the ratio, assign the inlets correctly and measure the finished mix.

Lesson 15 min Week 22

What you learn today

  • Mixing ratio via Setting
  • Assign inputs
  • Check the mix

Fresh breathing air for the base: oxygen from one tank, nitrogen from the other, mixed to about 21 % oxygen. That is exactly what the gas mixer (StructureGasMixer) is for.

Three pipes, one value

The mixer has two inlets and one outlet. Setting (0 to 100) is the share of inlet 1 in percent, inlet 2 gets the rest:

SettingInlet 1Inlet 2
100100 %0 %
7070 %30 %
2121 %79 %
define MIXER HASH("StructureGasMixer") # gas mixer
sbn MIXER HASH("Atemluft") Setting target # target = share of inlet 1
sbn MIXER HASH("Atemluft") On 1

If one of the three pipes is missing, the mixer reports Error 1 and does nothing.

Assigning the inlets

The game shows which connection is inlet 1 at the setting wheel: the info text names both shares, “Input 1” and “Input 2”. Connect the oxygen to inlet 1, then Setting 21 really means 21 % oxygen. Swapped inlets are the most common mistake – then you breathe 79 % oxygen.

Checking the mix

Trust is good, measuring is better. A pipe analyzer behind the outlet reads RatioOxygen (0 to 1). Multiplied by 100, the value can be compared with the target directly:

lbn actual ANALYZER HASH("Mischung") RatioOxygen Average
mul actual actual 100
sub dev actual target
abs dev dev
sgt fault dev TOLERANCE
Warning

The mixer splits by pressure share, each inlet at its own temperature. With gases at the same temperature that is the mole ratio. If one inlet is much warmer, it delivers fewer moles for the same pressure share – the mix then deviates from the Setting. That is why an analyzer belongs behind it. The pressure in the inlet pipes, on the other hand, does not change the ratio: the game calculates the moles of both inlets from Setting and temperature and scales both the same.

Note

If one of the two inlets is empty, the whole mixer stops. It does not mix “wrong”, it stops completely. A pressure drop at the outlet is the clue.

Exercise

Task

The mixer “Atemluft” gets oxygen on inlet 1 and nitrogen on inlet 2. A dial “Sauerstoff” sets the target share in percent (if it is missing, 21 applies). An analyzer “Mischung” measures behind the outlet.

  • Mixer Setting = target
  • Mixer only on while the analyzer delivers a value
  • Flashing light “Mischfehler” on when the mix is more than 2 percentage points off or the analyzer is missing
  • Display “O2” shows the measured share in percent, −1 without analyzer

Hints

Hint 1

First sbn MIXER HASH("Atemluft") Setting target.

Hint 2

Read RatioOxygen, times 100, snanz ok actual – and ok as On to the mixer.

Hint 3

Deviation with sub and abs, then sgt fault dev TOLERANCE and “or” it with seqz tmp ok.
