Day 150 of 365 · Advanced · Month 6: Atmosphere and control

Filtration

The filtration unit pulls up to two gases out of a pipe. It only filters with On and Mode Active – and only as long as the filters in its slots are still good.

Lesson 15 min Week 22

What you learn today

  • Filtration unit and filters
  • On and Mode
  • Check the filter in its slot

The base's exhaust pipe carries everything jumbled together: nitrogen, oxygen, CO₂, a little water vapour. If you want to recover single gases from it you need the filtration unit (StructureFiltration).

One inlet, two outlets

Which gases get filtered out is decided by the two gas filters in slot 0 and slot 1 – a CO₂ filter catches CO₂, a nitrogen filter nitrogen. Slot 2 takes a chip of its own; you do not need it here.

On and Mode

The unit only filters when both are right: On = 1 and Mode = FiltrationMode.Active (1). Mode 0 means Idle – the unit is on but does nothing.

sbn FILTRATION HASH("Luftfilter") Mode 1

Checking the filter in its slot

Every filter wears out. Its condition is the slot's Quantity, from 100 (new) to 0 (used up). With lbns you read a slot by the device name:

lbns q0 FILTRATION HASH("Luftfilter") 0 Quantity Average
lbns q1 FILTRATION HASH("Luftfilter") 1 Quantity Average

A filter only loses quantity when it really catches gas: a small filter one point per 145 ticks of work, a medium one (…M) per 721 and a large one (…L) per 2881 ticks. A CO₂ filter in CO₂-free air therefore lasts forever. Which gas a filter catches is shown by FilterType in the slot (the number from GasType., CO₂ = 4).

Warning

Empty filters are simply skipped. If both are empty, the unit pushes the whole mixture unfiltered into the waste outlet – using power, without any error. So check Quantity, not just whether the unit is running.

Tip

An empty slot returns Quantity 0, just like a used-up filter. One comparison is therefore enough for the “change filter” warning.

Exercise

Task

The filtration unit “Luftfilter” has two filters in slots 0 and 1.

  • Unit on and Mode 1 while at least one filter still has quantity, otherwise both 0
  • Flashing light “Filterwechsel” on when one of the filters is below 10 or the unit is missing
  • Display “Filter” shows the weaker of the two filters, −1 without the unit

Hints

Hint 1

At least one usable filter: max tmp q0 q1, then sgtz active tmp.

Hint 2

Write active twice: to On and to Mode.

Hint 3

For the warning take the weaker filter: min tmp q0 q1, slt warn tmp CHANGE – and “or” in the missing unit.

Quiz

4 questions. You pass from 60 % – the server does the grading.
