Project: cooling loop

The machine hall's cooling loop: wall coolers with hysteresis, a pump that keeps the loop just below room temperature, overtemperature protection and a coloured status display.

Project 35 min Week 24

What you learn today

  • Cooling loop with pump and radiator
  • Shut down on overtemperature
  • Status display

This week revolved around heat: air conditioner, radiators, heat exchangers, planet climate and overtemperature. The project turns it into the machine hall's cooling loop.

The plant

DevicePrefabName
Gas sensor in the hallStructureGasSensor“Halle”
Wall coolers (several)StructureWallCooler“Halle”
Pipe analyzer on the loopStructurePipeAnalysizer“Kuehlkreis”
Volume pump to the radiatorStructureVolumePump“Kuehlpumpe”
LED displayStructureConsoleLED5“Status”

The wall coolers push the hall's heat into the loop, the pump forces the loop gas through a radiator outside.

The rules

Whatonoff
Wall coolersabove 24 °Cbelow 21 °C
Pump (while coolers run)loop warmer than hall − 3 Kloop colder than hall − 6 K
Overtemperatureloop above 60 °Cloop below 45 °C

On overtemperature the coolers switch off – they would only push more heat into the overheated loop – and the pump keeps running so the radiator gets rid of the heat.

Status display

StateSettingColour
ready0Color.Green
cooling1Color.Blue
overtemperature2Color.Red
sensor fault3Color.Orange

With a select cascade the most important state always wins:

move state cool
select state hot S_HOT state
select state fault S_FAULT state

Milestones

  1. Wall coolers with hysteresis
  2. Pump in the band below room temperature
  3. Overtemperature: coolers off, pump on, state 2
  4. States 0 and 1 with the right colours
  5. Sensor gone: coolers off, pump on, state 3
Tip

add tmp room loop followed by snan fault tmp checks both readings in two lines: if one is NaN, the sum is NaN.

Diagram

Temperature curve with hysteresis 21 °C 19 °C band: state is kept Heater on on off off On at 19 °C, off only at 21 °C – nothing switches in between.
Three hystereses work together: room for the coolers, loop relative to the room for the pump, loop absolute for the heat protection.

Project task

Task

Build the cooling loop following the rules above. defines, aliases and measuring are already there; overtemperature, coolers, pump and status display are missing.

Milestones

  1. Milestone 1: wall coolers with hysteresis
  2. Milestone 2: pump in the band
  3. Milestone 3: overtemperature
  4. Milestone 4: states ready and cooling
  5. Milestone 5: sensor fails

Hints

Hint 1

Overtemperature: hysteresis with COOLED (and) and HOT (or).

Hint 2

Coolers: hysteresis with COOL and WARM, then “and” it with “not hot and no fault”.

Hint 3

Pump: band relative to the room as in lesson 164, then and cool, or hot, or fault.

Hint 4

State and colour each with move or select plus two more select.
