Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers that show you what is going on: two circuits exchange heat without mixing, and a display shows the inlet and outlet temperatures of both sides, the heat transferred, the effectiveness and the flow. Every device has a data connection, a control panel and can be read and controlled with IC10.

Devices

• Plate heat exchangers S, M and L in counter flow: 2, 3 or 4 × 2 cells, 0.75 m high, each for gas-gas, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid. Heat transfer 3, 8 and 20 kW/K.
• Compact heat exchanger in cross flow: one cell of floor space, sits right in the pipe runs, 0.8 kW/K, also in three media.
• Ground probe for gas or liquid: exchanges heat with the ground below the device – free cooling or heating without a compressor.

Honest physics: calculated with the epsilon-NTU method of heat transfer. Energy is only moved from one side to the other, never beyond equal temperature. The mod checks the energy balance every tick. Flow works like the game's counter-flow heat exchanger: whatever pumps or a pressure drop push from inlet to outlet flows through.

Control: a bypass on side A lets part of the flow pass the plates. Set it by hand, or let the device control it until the outlet of side A or side B reaches the target temperature. A pointer on the valve shows its position.

Ground probe: below every 2 m grid cell lies a ground store that slowly recovers towards the planet's soil temperature – −23 °C on Mars, 464 °C on Venus. Pump too much heat into it and you will notice it in the output.

Five kits from the Hydraulic Pipe Bender, the mouse wheel picks the medium, C + mouse wheel turns it. Paintable with spray can or spray gun. Labels, display and device names appear in German or English, depending on the game language. The server and all players need the mod.
