Heat Exchangers 1.1.0: shell-and-tube heat exchangers

The classic of heat transfer joins the mod: a horizontal shell with a tube bundle, in two designs – compact with U-tubes or large with straight tubes.

The heat exchanger mod gets its best-known member: the shell-and-tube heat exchanger. A horizontal shell on two saddles, a bundle of copper tubes inside, the tube sheets between the flanges at the ends. One fluid flows through the tubes, the other around them through the shell – guided by baffles you can see through a window in the shell.

There are two designs. The shell-and-tube M uses U-tubes: both tube connections sit on the channel and the bundle can expand freely. When switched off you can swing the channel cover open and look at the tube sheet, the tube ends and the pass partition with the bypass flap. While it is open the exchanger stays off – not even IC10 can switch it on.

The shell-and-tube L has straight tubes and bonnets at both ends. Five baffles guide the shell fluid across the bundle six times, the sections in counter flow one after another. That brings it very close to a pure counter-flow exchanger, and with 60 kW/K it is the strongest exchanger of the mod.

Again everything is calculated like in real heat transfer engineering. The U-tube design has a real limit: with equal flows on both sides it reaches at most 58.6 percent. That is not a bug but physics – the display shows the correction factor F, which tells you how close the flow arrangement is to pure counter flow. For gas against liquid it still gets close to 100 percent.

Both come for gas-liquid and liquid-liquid, both have a control column with display, bypass and control, LEDs, sounds and IC10 like the other devices. Old saves load unchanged. The server and all players need the update.

Everything else is in the guide.
