Filling and emptying tanks

Reading tanks with the pipe analyzer: pressure, temperature and TotalMoles, why pressure alone deceives and how to estimate the fill level.

Lesson 11 min Week 9

What you learn today

  • Read a pipe analyzer
  • Pressure, temperature and TotalMoles
  • Estimate the fill level

How full is the oxygen tank? A question that can decide over life and death – and one the tank itself does not answer.

Tanks have no data port

The tanks you build today are part of the pipe network: they have no data port and no logic. So you measure with a pipe analyzer (StructurePipeAnalysizer) on the pipe leading into the tank. Tank and pipe form one network, the analyzer sees both.

LogicTypeMeaning
Pressurenetwork pressure in kPa
Temperaturetemperature in K
TotalMolesgas amount in the network in mol
Volumenetwork volume in litres
RatioOxygen …gas shares

A small tank holds 6000 litres, a large one 50,000 litres, a pipe piece 10 litres.

Pressure deceives

Pressure depends on amount and temperature. If the tank stands in the sun, the pressure rises although not a single mole was added. At night it drops again. Whoever fills by pressure overfills in the cold – and the next noon the tank is too full.

TotalMoles is more honest: that is the actual content, however warm it is.

Estimating the fill level

A tank has no built-in fill level. You decide what “full” means and compute the share:

lbn press ANALYZER HASH("Tank") Pressure Average
div share press FULL # e.g. FULL = 10000 kPa
clamp share share 0 1
sbn DISPLAY HASH("Tankstand") Setting share # Mode Percent

The limit

Gas pipes and tanks hold up to 60,795 kPa, from about 48,636 kPa they count as stressed. Plan your targets well below that. Liquids have a separate, much lower limit – and there pressure is no measure of “full” at all.

Warning

A tank that has warmed up can climb over the limit without a single pump stroke. Leave enough room between target pressure and limit for the noon sun.

Tip

A display in Percent mode takes the share from 0 to 1 directly – no mul 100 needed.

Diagram

Pump output depending on tank pressure 10 0 Setting (L/tick) 4000 5000 tank pressure in kPa clamp: at most 10 (target − pressure) / 100 off
The pipe analyzer on the tank pipe delivers pressure, temperature and gas amount – that becomes the pump output.

Exercise

Task

A tank display. On the network: pipe analyzer “Tank”, LED displays “Tankstand” and “Tankinhalt”, flashing light “Tankgrenze”.

  • “Tankstand”: pressure / 10000 kPa, limited to 0 to 1, Mode Percent.
  • “Tankinhalt”: TotalMoles, Mode DisplayMode.Mol.
  • “Tankgrenze” on above 48636 kPa or when the analyzer is missing; then “Tankstand” shows 0.

Hints

Hint 1

Set both modes once before the loop.

Hint 2

Share: div, then clamp share share 0 1.

Hint 3

Warning: sgt against STRESSED, snan with or; on NaN set the share to 0 with select.

Quiz

4 questions. You pass from 60 % – the server does the grading.

Complete the day
