Pumps at a glance

Volume pump, turbo volume pump and liquid pump: Setting as flow in litres per tick, their limits and why the direction of installation matters.

Lesson 11 min Week 9

What you learn today

  • Volume pump, turbo volume pump and liquid pump
  • Setting as flow
  • Mind the direction

Gas does not go where you need it by itself. Pumps push it from one pipe network into the next. Three pumps come up again and again at the start.

The three pumps

PumpPrefabSettingPower
volume pumpStructureVolumePump0 to 10200 W
turbo volume pump (gas)StructureTurboVolumePump0 to 100600 W
liquid volume pumpStructureLiquidVolumePump0 to 10200 W

All three have On and Setting. Setting is the flow in litres per tick: at 10 the volume pump takes ten litres of gas from the input side each tick and pushes them to the output side.

Litres, not moles

A pump moves a volume. How much gas is in it depends on the pressure on the input side. Ten litres from a full tank are a lot of gas, ten litres from an almost empty pipe almost nothing. That is why a pump seems to slow down the emptier its source gets.

Mind the direction

  • The volume pump always moves from input to output. Install it the wrong way round and it reliably pumps in the wrong direction. A pump also separates the two pipe networks from each other.
  • The turbo volume pump moves ten times as much and has a Mode that switches the direction.
  • The liquid volume pump sits in liquid pipes and otherwise works like the volume pump.
Tip

Check the direction with one pipe analyzer in front of and one behind the pump: the pressure on the output side has to rise while it runs.

Steps and limits

No pump manages more than its maximum. If your program computes a flow, limit it to the pump's range – with clamp from the last lesson. When the pump runs at 0, also switch it off with On 0: that saves power and makes it visible in the game that it is standing still.

Warning

The turbo volume pump has separate ports for data and power. If only the data cable is connected, the chip sees it but it moves nothing.

Exercise

Task

A waste gas pumping station. On the network: pipe analyzer “Puffer”, volume pump “Abgaspumpe”, turbo volume pump “Hauptpumpe”.

  • Abgaspumpe: Setting = (pressure − 1000) / 200, limited to 0 to 10; On only when Setting is above 0.
  • Hauptpumpe: Setting once before the loop to 100; On above 4000 kPa.
  • Analyzer gone: both pumps off, Abgaspumpe Setting 0.

Hints

Hint 1

Flow: sub, div, clamp flow flow 0 10.

Hint 2

Catch NaN: snan, then select flow tmp 0 flow.

Hint 3

Main pump: Setting 100 before start:, only On inside the loop.
