Overview
Canister (ItemGasCanisterEmpty) in Stationeers: canister, hash 42280099, 64 L. With recipe.
The Canister is the gas bottle for almost everything. It fits any slot of the GasCanister type: the suit's air and waste tank, the propellant slot of the jetpacks, the Welding Torch, the Gas Tank Storage on a pipe network and the Portable Gas Tank.
It holds 64 litres and withstands 10,132.5 kPa. How much gas is inside follows from n = p · V / (R · T). At 7,600 kPa and 20 °C that is 7,600 · 64 / (8.3144 · 293.15) ≈ 200 mol.
Why not fill it to the limit? Because pressure rises with temperature. A canister at 9,000 kPa and 20 °C already has 9,000 · 333.15 / 293.15 ≈ 10,228 kPa at 60 °C – above the limit. According to the game code the canister then takes damage after more than 5 ticks and bursts. Filling to about 75 % of the limit leaves enough headroom for warming.
If you need more, there are bigger canisters: the Gas Canister (Smart) with 20,265 kPa and the High Volume Gas Canister with 83 litres. Liquids have their own canisters such as the Liquid Canister; those do not fit gas slots.
The Canister is made in the Hydraulic Pipe Bender from iron, and it is paintable – handy for colour-coding canisters by content. How to fill it for the suit is explained in Breathing air in the suit: canisters, filters and waste tank.
