What you learn today
- Limit power with Setting
- Separate networks
- Find bottlenecks
The workshop hangs on the main grid. When the arc furnace starts up there, the lights go out in the kitchen. A transformer in between separates the two networks and passes on only as much as you allow it.
Three sizes
| Device | Prefab | Maximum | Data connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transformer (small) | StructureTransformerSmall | 5,000 W | input is power + data |
| Transformer (medium) | StructureTransformerMedium | 25,000 W | output is power + data |
| Transformer (large) | StructureTransformer | 50,000 W | separate data port |
Important for your chip: it only sees devices on its data network. If the chip hangs behind a medium transformer on the workshop network, it sees the transformer and everything in the workshop – but nothing on the main grid.
What the LogicTypes mean
| LogicType | Meaning |
|---|---|
Setting | upper limit in W that the transformer passes on |
Maximum | highest possible setting |
Ratio | Setting divided by Maximum |
On | on or off |
The transformer passes on at most the smaller of Setting and what the input network can offer. A freshly built transformer stands at 0 and passes on nothing at all.
The trap: exactly equal is not enough
The game checks whether the power offered is greater than the demand. If it is smaller or exactly equal, all normal consumers behind the transformer switch off – only batteries, transformers and area power controls stay on. That is why the chip always adds some reserve.
Measuring the demand
The cable analyzer (StructureCableAnalysizer) sits directly on a cable and reads the network it sits on:
| LogicType | Meaning |
|---|---|
PowerRequired | what all consumers on the network ask for |
PowerPotential | what all generators offer |
PowerActual | what is really flowing right now |
lbn demand METER HASH("Werkstattnetz") PowerRequired Average
mul target demand RESERVE
max target target MINIMUM
min target target limit
max provides a lower limit, min caps it at what the transformer can do. If the workshop asks for more than Maximum, that is a bottleneck: no setting helps any more then, only a bigger transformer or fewer consumers.
If the analyzer is missing, target would be NaN. A NaN in Setting is no safe state. Catch it with select and set a fixed fallback value that is safe for your cable.

Exercise
Task
The chip hangs on the workshop network behind the medium transformer “Werkstatt”. The cable analyzer “Werkstattnetz” measures the demand. Set the transformer's Setting to demand · 1.2, at least 500 W, at most its Maximum. The light “Engpass” is on when the demand is above Maximum. If the analyzer is missing: Setting 2000 and the light on.
Hints
Hint 1
mul target demand RESERVE, then max with MINIMUM and min with limit.
Hint 2
Without a reading: select target ok target FALLBACK.
Hint 3
Bottleneck: sgt short demand limit, plus the missing reading with or.
