Recap industry

Mining, fuel and pressure in a safety chain: every link has to be closed for the pump to run, and the display names the first open spot.

Lesson 20 min Week 34

What you learn today

  • Mining, fuel and pressure together
  • Safety chains

This week was about industry with risk: a drill that eats power, a mixture that burns, tanks that can burst. What connects all three is a safety chain.

What a safety chain is

A plant may only run when all conditions are met. Every condition is a link. If a link is open, the plant stands still – without exception. For filling fuel that means:

Linkclosed when
1all measuring devices are reachable
2nothing burns in the store
3the tank is below 35,000 kPa
4the mixture is within the band around 2 : 1

Showing the first open spot

“The pump is not running” is a bad message. “Link 3 open” is a good one. The display shows the number of the most important open link. For that the chip checks from back to front – the link checked last wins:

select code tmp L_MIX code
select code tmp L_PRESS code
select code fire L_FIRE code
select code tmp L_MISSING code

If something burns and at the same time the mixture is wrong, the display shows 2: the fire is more important.

Mining, fuel and pressure together

The chain can be extended at will. The deep miner from this week would get a link “battery above 25 %” and one “no jam”. A furnace would get “pressure in the furnace below the emergency limit”. The rule stays the same: check everything, report the first open spot, only run at 0.

Typical mistakes of the week

  • Mixture set by percent, but the temperatures of the inputs forgotten.
  • A fire alarm that resets itself when the fire has suffocated.
  • Tank filled up to the limit without thinking of the midday heat.
  • A missing sensor counted as “all good”.
Tip

In a safety chain: whoever knows nothing opens the chain. That is why “device missing” has the highest rank. If the gas sensor is missing, fire becomes NaN – select treats NaN as “not equal to 0” and first shows fire. The NaN check afterwards turns it into the right message.

Exercise

Task

Build the safety chain for the pump “Fuellpumpe”. “Kette” shows the number of the most important open link (0 = all closed): 1 reading missing, 2 gas sensor “Lager” reports Combustion, 3 pipe analyzer “Brennstoff” on the tank line above 35000 kPa, 4 RatioHydrogen at the analyzer “Mischung” more than 0.02 away from 0.6667. The pump only runs at 0.

Hints

Hint 1

From the back: first link 4 (sub, abs, sgt), then 3, then 2, finally 1.

Hint 2

Link 1: add all three readings, snan, select.

Hint 3

Pump: seqz tmp code.

Quiz

3 questions. You pass from 60 % – the server does the grading.
