Day 230 of 365 · Pro · Month 8: Production

Project: smelter

The smelter: ore through a chute valve to the arc furnace, count ingots in storage, stop at the target amount – and only smelt while the battery has enough power.

Project 40 min Week 33

What you learn today

  • Ore in, ingots out
  • Target quantity
  • Mind the power demand

The smelter is the goal of the production weeks: ore in, ingots out, exactly as much as needed – and never draw so much power that the base goes dark.

Ore in

The digital chute valve lets ore through while Open is 1. When closed, the ore backs up in the chute in front of it – nothing gets lost. That way the chip controls the inflow without doing anything at the furnace itself.

Minding the power demand

The arc furnace needs energy per piece and switches itself off on a shortage. That is why the smelter only releases when the battery has more than 50 %, and locks below 20 %. Because the chip writes On every tick, the furnace starts again after a self shutdown as soon as the battery allows it.

Starting stacks

On alone smelts nothing. As on day 225, every ore stack in slot 0 needs an Activate 1. The chip starts it when the furnace is on and released, ore lies in slot 0 and no stack is running right now (Activate 0). The furnace does the rest: when the stack is through, it sets Activate back to 0 by itself.

Target amount

The dial gives how many ingots should lie in storage. The chip counts all slots of the ingot store. Once the target is reached, “Fertig” lights up, the valve closes and the furnace goes off. A target of 0 does not count as reached.

Milestones

  1. Release by battery level with hysteresis
  2. Count ingots in storage
  3. Stop at the target amount and report “Fertig”
  4. Progress in percent on “Ziel”
  5. Batteries missing: valve closed, furnace off
  6. Start every ore stack with Activate
Tip

The lock by the target amount acts directly on free with and free free tmp. That also clears the release in the hysteresis memory when the target is reached: if the target is raised afterwards, the smelter only starts again once the battery is above 50 %.

Diagram

Temperature curve with hysteresis 21 °C 19 °C band: state is kept Heater on on off off On at 19 °C, off only at 21 °C – nothing switches in between.
Two reasons to stop: too little power (with hysteresis) or target reached. Both close the valve and switch off the furnace.

Project task

Task

Build the smelter following the rules. defines and reading are there, release, counting, target amount, the output to valve, furnace and displays and the start of every stack are missing.

Milestones

  1. Milestone 1: release by battery level
  2. Milestone 2: count ingots
  3. Milestone 3: stop at the target amount
  4. Milestone 4: progress in percent
  5. Milestone 5: batteries missing
  6. Milestone 6: start every stack with Activate

Hints

Hint 1

Release as with the arc furnace: sgt/and with OFF, sgt/or with ON.

Hint 2

Target amount: sge done ingots target, only valid with a target above 0; then combine free with “not done”.

Hint 3

Valve Open and furnace On both get free.

Hint 4

Stack: read On, Activate and slot 0; only when on, released, occupied and Activate 0, write Activate 1 once.
