Stackers and chutes

The stacker gathers single items into stacks, the digital chute valve lets through or stops. The chip sets the stack size and controls the flow.

Lesson 20 min Week 35

What you learn today

  • Set the stack size
  • Chute valves
  • Control the flow

A locker full of single pieces of iron ore is full quickly: every piece occupies a slot. Stacked, 50 fit into one slot. The stacker turns them into tidy stacks – and the chute in front of it has to know when it may deliver.

The stacker

StructureStacker has three slots: input (0), output (1) and processing (2), in which the stack grows. Setting is the stack size, at least 1, up to 500 on the wheel. No stack gets bigger than the item itself allows – ore stacks up to 50, ingots up to 500.

ModeNameOutput
0Automaticas soon as the stack reaches the size, a different item comes or nothing follows
1Logiconly when the chip sets Output to 0

In logic mode the stacker resets Output to −1 itself after every output – and so does every write of Mode 1, even with the same value. So you only write Mode when it is not already 1. Activate 1 empties the processing slot at once.

Setting the stack size

A dial gives the size. clamp keeps it within the allowed range:

clamp size size MIN_STACK MAX_STACK
sbn STACKER HASH("Stapler") Setting size

In logic mode the chip releases as soon as there is enough in the processing slot.

Chute valves

The digital chute valve (StructureChuteDigitalValveLeft, also as …Right) lets items through while Open is 1. Closed, everything backs up in front of it.

It can count as well: Setting is a threshold from 0 to 300. If it is greater than 0, Quantity counts every item let through, and on reaching the threshold the valve closes itself and sets Quantity back to 0. With Setting 0 it does not count and stays open.

Controlling the flow

If a finished stack still lies in the stacker's output slot, the chute behind it is full. Then nothing more should come in at the front:

lbns full STACKER HASH("Stapler") 1 Occupied Average
seqz tmp full
sbn VALVE HASH("Zulauf") Open tmp

That way the flow backs up at the valve instead of in the stacker, and nothing gets wedged.

Tip

If the stacker is missing, Occupied returns NaN. The chip counts that as “full” and closes the valve – no material into a machine it cannot see.

Exercise

Task

The stacker “Stapler” runs in logic mode (Mode 1). Its stack size comes from the dial “Stapelgroesse”, limited to 1 to 500. If at least that many items lie in processing slot 2, the chip releases with Output 0. The chute valve “Zulauf” (Setting 0) is open while the stacker's output slot 1 is free; if the stacker is missing, it is closed.

Hints

Hint 1

clamp size size MIN_STACK MAX_STACK, then write Setting. Mode only when it is not already LOGIC.

Hint 2

Output occupied or NaN means full: snan and or, then seqz for the valve.

Hint 3

Release: blt amount size start, otherwise Output 0.
