Plant health

Monitor Health and Efficiency and narrow down the cause: harmful gas, temperature, water or CO₂, prioritised by urgency.

Lesson 18 min Week 38

What you learn today

  • Monitor Health
  • Narrow down causes
  • Warning

The Harvie's face is sad, Health is dropping. But why? A chip that only reports “sick” sends you searching. One that names the cause sends you straight to the right place.

What the values say

ValueSourcemeans
Healthslot 0 of the tray1 undamaged, below that damage, −1 without a plant
Efficiencyslot 0 of the trayhow fast it grows right now
ModeHarvie1 happy, 2 unhappy, 3 dead

In the game code Efficiency is the product of five partial values: breathing, light, temperature, water and pressure. If one of them drops to 0, growth stops. The Harvie shows an unhappy face when the plant gets harmful gas, is thirsty or cannot heal.

Narrowing down causes

A gas sensor in the room and the hydroponics device are enough for the four most common causes:

CodeCauseMeasurement
1harmful gasPressure · RatioPollutant above 1 kPa
2temperatureoutside 20 to 30 °C
3waterTotalMoles of the tray almost 0
4CO₂below 1 %

The 1 kPa come from the game data: from this partial pressure on, pollutant counts as harmful gas for the plant. Partial pressure is total pressure times share.

Priority

If two causes apply, the most urgent one should be shown. According to the game data a plant takes damage after 300 s of harmful gas, frost or heat, after 1800 s of thirst, and only after 3600 s without breathing gas. Hence the order of the codes.

The trick for priority: check from least to most important and overwrite with select each time. Whatever matches last wins:

move code 0
slt tmp co2 CO2_MIN
select code tmp 4 code # least important first
slt tmp water WATER_MIN
select code tmp 3 code
slt tmp temp T_MIN
select code tmp 2 code # overwrites 3 and 4
Warning

If the sensor is missing, all comparisons are 0 – code 0 would then mean “all fine”. That is why there is a separate check with code 9 at the very end. A trick saves lines here: add tmp temp water is NaN as soon as one of the two is NaN.

Note

The times are base values. Genes can make a plant more resistant, but the order of the dangers mostly stays the same.

Exercise

Task

Build the plant diagnosis for the hydroponics device “Beet” and the gas sensor “Gewaechshaus”:

  • display “Ursache”: 1 harmful gas (partial pressure of pollutant above 1 kPa), 2 temperature outside 20–30 °C, 3 TotalMoles of the tray below 1, 4 CO₂ below 1 %, otherwise 0 – with several, the smallest number
  • 9 if the sensor or the tray is missing
  • light “Pflanze” on when a code is active or the Health of an existing plant is below 0.8

Hints

Hint 1

Check from code 4 to code 1 and use select code tmp N code each time – the most important wins.

Hint 2

Partial pressure: Pressure times RatioPollutant.

Hint 3

Health −1 means no plant: sgez value value masks it before you combine with and.

Quiz

4 questions. You pass from 60 % – the server does the grading.
