The Spray Gun is a tool with a single slot. It is called "Spray Can" and takes a spray paint, for example Spray Paint (Red) or Spray Paint (Blue). The game knows 16 spray paints in total, including four metallic shades (bronze, gold, obsidian, silver).
Whether something can be painted is fixed for every item in the game. In this wiki you see it in the fact box of every page under "Paintable". A few examples from the game data:

Painting is more than decoration. Colour-code gas canisters by content, say oxygen white and waste brown, and you will not grab the wrong one for your suit. The same goes for pipes and tanks when several gas networks run side by side.
The spray gun needs no battery. It is made in the Tool Manufactory from tier 2 out of steel, invar and silicon. Since it counts as a tool, it fits the Tool Belt.
