What you learn today
- Sequence of a mission
- Checklists in the chip
- Launch and return
A mission to the asteroid is more than a launch. Fuel, crew, drill head, cargo, the way back – whoever forgets one of them only notices out there. That is why pilots work with checklists. Your chip can do that too, and it never forgets an item.
The course of a mission
| Phase | what happens | transition to the next phase |
|---|---|---|
| 0 preparation | refuel, crew on board, hatch closed | checklist complete and launch pressed |
| 1 flight | way to the destination | destination reached |
| 2 work | drilling, scanning | hold full, drill head worn or reserve reached |
| 3 return flight | way home | landed |
| 4 unloading | cargo out, check the rocket | back to 0 |
Every phase has a condition under which it ends. If the condition is code in the chip, it is no longer the gut feeling that decides, but the number.
Checklists in the chip
A checklist is a bit word: every fulfilled item sets its bit.
| Bit | Item | Check |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | fuel | Mass − DryMass at least 6000 kg |
| 1 | thrust-to-weight | ThrustToWeight at least 1.3 |
| 2 | crew ready | lever “Crew” thrown |
| 3 | hatch closed | door “Luke” not open |
If all four bits are set, the word is %1111 = 15 and the launch is clear. For the person in front of it the chip shows which item is missing first. For that it checks from back to front, so the smallest open item writes last and wins:
move first 0
ext tmp wort 3 1
select first tmp first 4 # item 4 open?
ext tmp wort 2 1
select first tmp first 3
ext tmp wort 1 1
select first tmp first 2
ext tmp wort 0 1
select first tmp first 1 # item 1 last: wins
Launch and return
The checklist clears the launch, but it does not launch. A person presses the button. The return, on the other hand, the chip may trigger itself, because it is the safe direction: better a mission ended too early than a rocket without fuel in space.
A missing device fulfils no item. If the avionics is missing, items 1 and 2 are open, if the hatch is missing, item 4 is open. That is intended – a rocket without avionics does not launch.
Exercise
Task
Build the checklist according to the table above. Avionics “Avionik”, lever “Crew”, door “Luke”. The display “Checkwort” shows the bit word, the display “Checkliste” the number of the first open item (1 to 4) or 0 if everything is fulfilled. The light “Startfrei” is only lit with a complete list.
Hints
Hint 1
Bit 0 directly with sge word …, the others with ins word tmp N 1.
Hint 2
Hatch closed means Open is 0: seqz tmp tmp. A missing door returns NaN, and seqz of that is 0.
Hint 3
Find the first open item from back to front with ext and select.
