The Substation brings power engineering for large stations: a transformer series from 10 kW to 1 GW with losses, temperature, fans and protection, a grid stabiliser with a capacitor bank, switchgear made of incoming and outgoing bays on a busbar of its own, a control desk with a live network diagram and four distribution boards from the switch box to the main distribution cabinet. Every device has its own model. All model labels, displays, buttons and device names appear in German or English, depending on the game language.

With the Kit (Switch Bay) the mouse wheel picks incoming or outgoing bay, with the accessories kit line gantry or warning sign. The busbar bundle is a coil like a cable and also fits the cable gun and the electrician's belt. The costs are in GameData/umspannwerk.xml in the mod folder.
Cable protection and full power
Every powered device follows the same rule as the Power Regulator:
- No connection ever carries more than 95 % of the weakest cable or fuse in its network. Other generators and consumers in that network count too. So no cable burns out.
- From networks with their own consumers a device only takes the surplus, so nothing there switches off.
- A device only hands out what is in its buffer. No energy comes from nothing, not even at 1 GW next to 50 W consumers.
| Weakest part in the network | One connection carries at most |
|---|---|
| Cable | 4.75 kW |
| Heavy cable | 95 kW |
| Super heavy cable | 475 kW |
| Extreme Cable | 9.5 MW |
| Busbar, Power Cable+, Fluix Line Unlimited | no limit |
So the generator and grid coupling transformers only reach full power on unlimited conductors. If a connected cable is weaker than the rated power, the display shows the cable limit in orange, and looking at the device says so too.
Data bridge
With the DATA button the devices of all connected networks are visible to IC10 and logic across the network border, also together with the Power Regulator. Power stays separate. The data bridge is on for newly built devices and can be switched off per device (button, IC10, console) or completely in the config. The switch box has no DATA button, there IC10 or uw bruecke switches it.
Transformers
Generators go to PRIMARY (power and data, input), consumers to SECONDARY (power, output). Arrows on the device show the direction. On the small transformer PRIMARY sits top left (cable from above), SECONDARY bottom right. All other transformers stand on the floor: PRIMARY left, SECONDARY right, both at floor level. The display is at eye level.
| Transformer | Cooling | Heating time | Special |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Transformer | natural air cooling | about 5 min | wall device on a mounting frame |
| Medium Transformer | natural oil cooling | about 8 min | sloped control panel at the front |
| Large Transformer | fans, 2 stages | about 12 min | 4 fans |
| Power Transformer | fans, 2 stages | about 20 min | 8 fans on two radiator banks |
| Generator Transformer | fans, 2 stages | about 30 min | half the losses, enclosed phase busducts |
| Grid Coupling Transformer | fans, 2 stages | about 40 min | 35 % of the losses, fire wall, 12 fans |
Mode
| Mode | Direction |
|---|---|
| FORWARD | PRIMARY → SECONDARY (default) |
| REVERSE | SECONDARY → PRIMARY, for example to feed solar power back |
| OFF | no power |
Losses and temperature
- Losses: 1 per mille of the rated power at no load plus 0.8 % at rated load, with the square of the load. The generator transformer has half of that, the grid coupling transformer 35 %. Without power there are no losses.
- The losses turn into heat. At most 10 kW per transformer goes into the air at the device, the rest radiates away.
- Overload: up to 150 % of the rated power. Above 100 % the transformer slowly heats up.
- Fans (large, power, generator and grid coupling transformer): AUTO switches stage 1 from 60 °C and stage 2 from 75 °C. Each stage uses 0.05 % of the rated power.
- From 105 °C the transformer throttles its power instead of tripping. At 130 °C the protection trips. A reset is only possible below 90 °C.
- Hot climates (up to 50 °C ambient, for example Venus and Vulcan) and vacuum lower the continuous rating. In vacuum 40 % of the natural cooling remains, and the fans do nothing.
Protection
The transformer trips on over-temperature, on a short circuit (PRIMARY and SECONDARY on the same network) and by hand or IC10. When tripped nothing flows, the FAULT LED flashes red. ACK resets it.
Operation
| Control | Effect |
|---|---|
| Rotary switch | main switch |
| MODE | FORWARD → REVERSE → OFF |
| FANS | AUTO → off → stage 1 → stage 2 (transformers with fans only) |
| LIMIT - and + | manual limit, with Alt in fine steps; above the cable limit = none |
| PAGE < > | change the display page |
| DATA | data bridge on or off |
| ACK | reset a trip |
The display has five pages: POWER, TEMPERATURE, NETWORKS, PROTECTION, DATA BRIDGE. A dial thermometer (0 to 150 °C) and a load gauge (0 to 150 %) on the tank show the values as well.
| LED | Meaning |
|---|---|
| RUN | transformer working |
| FAULT | flashes red after a trip |
| LOAD | green, orange above 80 %, red blinking above 100 % |
| TEMP. | green, yellow from 60 °C, orange from 105 °C, red blinking shortly before the trip |
| FANS | blue blinking: fan stage 1, blue: stage 2 (transformers with fans only) |
| DATA | data bridge |
Grid Stabiliser
A cabinet with a capacitor bank: stores 10 MJ and delivers up to 250 kW (both adjustable, up to 10 GW and 1,000,000 MJ). INPUT on the left (power and data), OUTPUT on the right, both at floor level. It only charges from the surplus of the input network.
| Mode | Effect |
|---|---|
| FOLLOW | delivers what the output network needs and bridges dips at the input (clouds, calm, outage) from storage |
| CONSTANT | delivers the set point evenly, set with SET - and +; 0 = maximum power |
| SMOOTH | delivers the moving average of the input power over 120 s, turning jittery wind or solar power into an even flow |
Loss: 1 % of the output plus 0.2 % self-discharge per minute. A 10-segment charge bar next to the display shows the level, the CHARGE (green) and DISCHARGE (orange) LEDs the direction. Buttons: SET - and +, MODE, PAGE < >, DATA, ACK and the main switch. The display has the pages STORAGE, OUTPUT, INPUT and DATA BRIDGE.
Switchgear
Busbar
A square busbar duct with copper bars for power and data, without a power limit. It is built with the busbar bundle like a cable: right-click opens the shape selection (11 shapes), the mouse wheel picks. With wire cutters in the other hand a new piece merges into the matching junction; deconstruct with wire cutters as well.
End to end the busbar connects to all cables, but only one kind of cable fits in one cell. A network burns out at its weakest part: if there is a game cable or fuse in the busbar network, its limit applies. Looking at the busbar shows limit, load and the connected bays and warns about weaker parts. A destroyed busbar (welding torch or a configured limit exceeded) conducts nothing and is removed with wire cutters.
Incoming and outgoing bay
Both bays are outdoor switch bays with busbar disconnector, circuit breaker, current transformer, line disconnector with earthing switch and a local cabinet with a mimic diagram. BUSBAR at the back (power and data), LINE at the front (power), both at floor level.
| Bay | Roof | Power flows | Protection mode (PROT. button) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming Bay | blue | LINE → busbar | PRIORITY (used first) or RESERVE (only covers what the priority feeds cannot, e.g. battery or emergency power) |
| Outgoing Bay | orange | busbar → LINE | LIMIT (holds the feeder at its limit) or TRIP (after 2 s of overload the breaker opens) |
- All bays on the same busbar form one plant: incoming power flows straight into the feeders, the busbar only carries the difference.
- Power only flows with breaker ON, disconnector CLOSED and earthing OFF. New bays start with disconnector CLOSED, earthing OFF, breaker OFF.
- Interlocking: disconnector only with breaker OFF, earthing only with the disconnector open, ON not onto an earthed bay. Disconnector and earthing switch move visibly.
- A short circuit (LINE and busbar on the same network) trips at once. ACK resets it.
- With
AutoWiedereinschaltunga feeder switches back on once by itself after an overload trip.
Buttons on the local cabinet: illuminated buttons ON and OFF (breaker), DISCON., EARTH, PROT., LIMIT - +, PAGE < >, DATA, ACK. The display has five pages: flow, switches, protection, busbar, data bridge. LEDs: RUN, FAULT, LIMIT (at the limit) and DATA.
Control Desk
A desk with a monitor. The control desk finds every switch bay in its data network and draws them live as a network diagram: busbar, disconnectors, breakers, earthing switches, flows and connected transformers. Green means live, grey dead, orange at the limit or hot, red blinking tripped, yellow earthed.
- Pick a bay with BAY < >, with several busbars with BUSBAR.
- Then ON, OFF, DISCON., EARTH and ACK – like at the bay, interlocked.
- Press E-STOP twice: every breaker opens.
- On a trip the beacon and the ALARM LED flash and the horn sounds until ACK.
- One connection at the back for power and data (50 W): directly to the busbar or to a network with a data bridge. A thin cable in the busbar network limits the whole plant.
Step by step
- Lay the busbar.
- Place the bays with their back (BUSBAR) on the busbar and run the LINE at the front to the power plant, transformer or consumer network.
- Set incoming bays to PRIORITY or RESERVE, outgoing bays to LIMIT or TRIP.
- Per bay: earthing OFF, disconnector CLOSED, breaker ON.
- Connect the control desk to the busbar or to a network with a data bridge.
Distribution boards
Every distribution board has inputs I (power and data) and outputs O (power), each on its own network. Arrows on the device point in or out. Power passes through a buffer: never more goes out than comes in. An output on an input network is a short circuit.
The wall boxes sit on a mounting frame 16 cm in front of the wall. They stay fully visible in a finished wall too, the cables lie on the wall as usual. Levers and display can be used while standing.
| Board | Inputs | Outputs | Protection | Display |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch Box | I1 left | O1/O2 bottom, O3/O4 top | switches only, no tripping | – |
| Small Distribution Board | I1 top left | O1/O2 bottom, O3/O4 top | miniature circuit breakers | 6 pages |
| Sub-Distribution Board | I1 top, I2 bottom, both left | O1–O4 bottom, O5–O8 top | miniature circuit breakers, metering per output | 12 pages |
| Main Distribution Board | I1/I2 left, I3/I4 right, at floor level | O1–O6 front, O7–O12 back, on top to the ceiling | miniature circuit breakers, priorities 1–3 | 19 pages |
The switch box is meant for lights, doors and small loads: four switches and a main switch, no metering. The cable protection only limits.
Miniature circuit breakers
The small, sub- and main boards have a toggle lever with an LED per output. It trips when the output network wants more than the limit for longer than 2 s: its own limit (LIMIT button on the output page, 1 kW to 10 MW in the 1–2–5 series) or the cable limit. Lever up again means reset and on. Clicking a lever jumps the display to that output's page.
| Output LED | Meaning |
|---|---|
| green | supplied |
| yellow blinking | not enough power |
| blue | on, but no power |
| orange | at the limit |
| orange blinking | shed (load shedding) |
| red blinking | tripped or short circuit |
Sub-distribution board: mains and reserve
The SELECT button on the overview page sets the mode:
| Mode | Effect |
|---|---|
| PARALLEL | both inputs supply a share |
| PRIORITY | I1 first, I2 only covers the rest. If I1 fails, I2 takes over without interruption |
| MANUAL I1 | I1 only |
| MANUAL I2 | I2 only |
Main distribution board: priorities and load shedding
- Every input has a rank: PRIORITY, RESERVE or OFF (SELECT button on the input page).
- Every output has a priority 1 to 3 (SELECT button on the output page).
- Load shedding (SELECT button on the overview): if the power is short for more than 2 s, first the outputs with priority 3 are disconnected, then those with priority 2. Priority 1 is never shed. With 5 % margin for 10 s the groups return.
- When power is short, outputs are supplied in the order of their priority.
- Groups: IC10 or
uw gruppeswitch all outputs of one priority at once.
The cabinet is 1.75 m high and fits under a 2 m ceiling. It has no connections at the back, so it can stand against a wall. The SHED LED shows that load shedding is active.

Example: switch off priority 3 when the battery is low
The main distribution board is named "Hauptverteiler", a large station battery "Akku". If the battery falls below 25 %, the chip switches off every output with priority 3, above 50 % it switches them on again. Multiplayer
New devices: the server and all players need the mod. The server calculates; displays, LEDs, switch positions and the network diagram are synchronised to everyone and saved with the game. See Multiplayer.
Known limitations
- A single game cable or fuse in the network limits the whole connection. GW power is only possible if the network consists entirely of unlimited conductors.
- A transformer with MW losses puts at most 10 kW of heat into the air, the rest counts as radiated. Otherwise a single air cell would overheat at once.
- In vacuum the fans do nothing, so a heavily loaded transformer runs throttled there.
- Several stabilisers on the same networks work against each other. For large grids rather set one stabiliser to a higher power in the config.
- There is no timer. Outputs and groups can be switched by IC10 with a clock or a daylight sensor.
- The data bridge links devices, not the channels Channel0–7.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cable limit orange on the display | a cable in the network carries less than the rated power | lay busbar, Power Cable+ or Fluix Line Unlimited all the way |
| Transformer only delivers 9.5 MW | Extreme Cable in the network | unlimited conductors for more power |
| THROTTLED | transformer above 105 °C | reduce the load, check the fans, cooler surroundings |
| TRIPPED: over-temperature, ACK does nothing | transformer still above 90 °C | let it cool down, then ACK |
| TRIPPED: short circuit | both sides on the same network | separate the networks: every connection needs a network of its own |
| EARTHED, bay does not switch on | earthing ON | earthing OFF, then disconnector CLOSED, then ON |
| Disconnector cannot be switched | breaker ON (interlocking) | breaker OFF first |
| Control desk: NO BAYS | bays not in the desk's data network | connect the desk to the busbar or to a network with a data bridge |
| Whole switchgear only delivers 4.75 kW | thin cable in the busbar network, e.g. to the control desk | connect the desk through a network of its own with a data bridge |
| Output LED orange blinking | load shedding in the main board | more generation; the group returns after 10 s with 5 % margin |
| Output LED red blinking | circuit breaker tripped or output on the input network | reduce the load or separate the networks, lever up again |
| IC10 cannot find a device behind the transformer | data bridge off | DATA button or uw bridge an |
| Nothing flows | main switch off, mode OFF or bay not closed | check switch, MODE and bay position |
